Knitting baby clothes: Which wool is really suitable?

The Ultimate Baby Yarn Guide: Which yarn is best for baby clothes?

Knitting baby items is great fun – whether for your own child, your grandchildren, or as a gift for a newborn. However, to ensure your handmade favorite doesn't just look cute but is also actually comfortable to wear in everyday life, choosing the right yarn is essential.

Baby skin is sensitive, and life with a baby leaves no room for complicated hand washing. We have summarized the key points you need to consider when choosing yarn and which types are best suited for specific projects.

The baby yarn checklist: What should you look for?

Before you start a project, your yarn should meet these three criteria:

  • Absolutely itch-free & soft: Baby skin reacts immediately to rough fibers. Use only yarns that feel super gentle against the neck or the inside of your wrist.
  • Machine washable (Superwash or easy-care): Hand washing in everyday life with a baby? Highly unlikely! The items must be able to go into the washing machine without shrinking.
  • Breathable & low-lint: Babies cannot regulate their body temperature well yet. Yarns made from pure natural fibers or high-quality blends provide optimal warmth without causing overheating. Important: Avoid long-haired yarns like mohair for newborns, as babies can easily get loose fibers in their mouths.

The Merino classic: Gentle on the skin & elegant in appearance

Pure merino wool is the absolute gold standard for baby clothing. It doesn't itch, regulates temperature perfectly, and keeps the baby comfortably warm.

Our favorite: Gazzal Wool 175

This yarn, made from 100% fine merino wool, is extremely easy to care for thanks to its Superwash treatment. The "Superwash" process ensures that the wool fibers do not felt in the washing machine – a must for baby clothes!

Baby cardigan

This charming baby cardigan is knitted using Gazzal Wool 175 – following the pattern for the Cleo Set by PetiteKnit (supplemented with cute octopus motifs!). The fine gauge of the yarn makes the stitch pattern beautifully even, lightweight, yet pleasantly warm.

For cold days & quick projects: Gazzal Wool 115 & Wool 90

Do you need something a bit thicker? If you want to knit for the depths of winter or want your project finished quickly, Gazzal Wool 115 and Gazzal Wool 90 are ideal.

  • Ideal for: Thick winter overalls, cozy baby blankets, warm mittens, or thick hats for the stroller.

Gentle, easy-care heroes: Baby blend yarns

If you are looking for yarns that are particularly shape-retentive, extremely soft, and affordable, special baby blend yarns are the perfect choice.

Alize Baby Best (with anti-pilling & bamboo)

The combination of polyacrylic and viscose from bamboo makes this yarn incredibly soft and smooth. Thanks to the anti-pilling treatment, the yarn won't form annoying little knots, even after frequent wearing and washing.

  • Ideal for: Lightweight transitional jackets, blankets, sweaters, and baby accessories.

Alize Happy Kids

A true all-rounder! Containing a portion of wool combined with easy-care fibers, Alize Happy Kids is wonderfully colorful, durable, and hugs the skin gently.

  • Ideal for: Robust crawling clothes, colorful everyday items, and clothing for active children.

Special tip for warm baby feet: Felting wool

Babies often get cold feet – yet they frequently kick off regular socks. Here is a brilliant trick: felted baby booties!

Gründl Filzwolle Uni / Color

Simply knit or crochet the booties slightly larger and then wash them at 40°C in the washing machine. The wool intentionally felts and shrinks down to the perfect size.

  • Ideal for: Really thick, windproof, and shape-retentive baby slippers & crawling shoes that are guaranteed not to slip off and will keep feet nice and warm!

Conclusion: Which yarn fits your project?

  • For elegant clothing & cardigans (like our Cleo Set example): Gazzal Wool 175 / Woolstar
  • For thick winter clothing & blankets: Gazzal Wool 115 / 90
  • For easy-care everyday items: Alize Baby Best / Happy Kids
  • For warm baby booties: Gründl Filzwolle
